Years of Supporting Local Families
At Anderson Family Chiropractic Health Centre in Mackay, we offer acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine as part of a holistic approach to health. Rooted in traditional practices, acupuncture is used to support the body’s natural processes by addressing areas of energetic imbalance. Fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body, selected based on a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms and overall presentation. We consider this therapy a valuable tool for people seeking support with stress, fatigue, discomfort or disrupted body rhythms.
This service is offered in combination with other therapies when appropriate, and always discussed in full before proceeding. If you’d like to explore whether acupuncture could form part of your care, we’re happy to answer your questions.

Integrating Traditional Principles
Our acupuncture services are based on the guiding principles of traditional Chinese medicine, which views the body as an interconnected system of energy pathways. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your primary concerns, medical history and any patterns that may relate to sleep, digestion, emotional wellbeing or movement. From there, we determine an appropriate treatment approach that may include acupuncture, cupping or Chinese medicine techniques.
We understand that acupuncture is a personal experience, so we always explain each step of the process and adapt techniques to suit your level of comfort. The number and frequency of sessions will depend on your response and goals. Our focus is to provide calm, respectful and informed care that supports your overall wellbeing.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to influence energy flow, known as “Qi” in traditional Chinese medicine. It’s believed that these points correspond to internal systems, and stimulation may assist in restoring balance. From a western perspective, acupuncture may influence the nervous system, blood flow and muscle response. The mechanisms are still being studied, but many people find it helpful when used as part of a wider health strategy.
Is acupuncture safe?
When performed by a trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture is generally considered safe. As with any intervention, there are some risks—such as minor bruising, tenderness or light-headedness—but these are usually temporary. A qualified provider will take a full history, explain any relevant precautions and monitor your comfort throughout the session. Always inform your practitioner about existing conditions, allergies or medications.
What can acupuncture help with?
People seek acupuncture for a wide range of reasons including stress, sleep disturbances, musculoskeletal tension, headaches and fatigue. In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s used to address imbalances in energy flow that may contribute to physical or emotional symptoms. While it’s not a replacement for conventional medical care, acupuncture may complement other treatments and provide additional support for wellbeing when used responsibly.
What does acupuncture feel like?
The sensation of acupuncture varies depending on the person and the point being treated. Most people feel little to no discomfort during needle insertion. You might feel a dull ache, tingling or slight heaviness at the site, which is usually brief. The session is typically quiet and relaxed, and many people find it calming. After treatment, it’s normal to feel rested, energised or slightly tired as your body adjusts.
